Painting Tips for ACW Models
Making Flags

I use the following technique to produce effective looking flags (thanks go to Rod Langton):

  1. Paint the flag using darker colours than those finally required. If using printed flags, paint over the original, using it as a guide.
  2. Cut out and glue the flag around the flagpole. I use PVA adhesive, as this does not cause the flag to become too rigid when set. Often this is not strong enough to attach the flag to the flagstaff. To do this I slide the flag off the staff once the PVA has set, put a little Superglue on the part of the staff where the flag will sit and slide the flag back on again.
  3. Fold the flag back and forth upon itself in a concertina pattern as shown below.
  4. Folded Flag

  5. Tease out the flag and, by squeezing it top and bottom, mould it to a shape that looks right
  6. Paint the raised areas using the final colours for the flag. Leave the areas in the folds dark to simulate shadow.

The Flag is now complete (see pictures below).
