These were flown from the Jack staff at the bow of the ship.

Union Navy

The Union navy jack consisted of the canton (upper left corner) from the national flag, as shown below.

Confederate Navy

The Confederates used two styles of Jack during the war. The first was blue and carried a number of white stars denoting the states of the Confederacy.

This was replaced in 1863 with a flag similar to the battleflag, or the canton of the naval ensign.
