Flags

The naval vessels of both the Union and Confederate navies flew similar types of flag during the civil war.

These were :

  • Naval Ensign - flown at the stern of a vessel to indicate the ship's nationality
  • Naval Jacks - a small flag often flown at the bow of a ship
  • Comission Pennant - a long narrow flag flown from a vessel's masthead
