Confederate Ironclad Ship Colours
These varies greatly, but I have tried to give information on individual vessels where known.
Charleston Squadron - CSS Chicora, CSS Palmetton State, CSS Columbia
At least some of these vessels appear to have had their casemates painted a light, probably duck egg, blue.
How long this paintwork would have lasted in the salt air is unknown, but later pictures show the vessels with light rust brown coloured casemates, possibly indicating that the paintwork was neglected.
CSS Arkansas
The Arkansas was built in a hurry, and (so one account goes) the only paint available appears to have been a chocolate brown. This proved very useful as it matched the colour of the river bank, so may in fact have been intentional.
Other confederate ironclads are largely unknown and although light gray is often suggested, I have been unable to find any first hand account or source that confirms this. I personally use a gunmetal colour, as this gives no doubt that it is an ironclad.
